Responsive UI design for IAAF 2015 world Championships

As the Lead UI Designer, I was tasked with creating a fully responsive and dynamic site that delivered live data and stats to the world. The site had to be lightning quick to load and refresh, ensuring it was the most trusted and comprehensive source of results for journalists and sports enthusiasts.

One of the biggest challenges was presenting a huge variety of information in a simple and easy-to-navigate way. To achieve this, I focused on designing a clean and intuitive interface that allowed users to easily search the IAAF’s vast stats and results database, which included a profile of every athlete who had participated in an IAAF event – around 100,000 profiles, three times the population of the IAAF’s home city state of Monaco.

In addition to the website, I also designed a Chinese app for the World Championships, ensuring that users in China could access the live data and stats just as easily.

The results were impressive. One single session at the World Championships in Bejing (for which also created a Chinese app) yielded record results:

• Sessions: 2,097,039
• Users: 1,086,655
• Page views: 11,313,124
• Avg session duration: 00:10:21

These impressive results demonstrate the success of the responsive design and the value it provided to users, resulting in significant increases in user numbers and engagement across social media channels.
